Getting two runs without the benefit of a hit in the sixth inning, the Red Sox emerged with an 8-6 victory over the Angels. The Red Sox trailed, 6-5, going into the top of the sixth when Butch Hobson opened with a base on balls. When Rick Burleson grounded to Dave Chalk, Bobby Grich dropped the throw on the attempted forceout and both runners were safe.

After a sacrifice by Jerry Remy, Jim Rice walked to load the bases. Jack Brohamer then hit a grounder to Don Baylor, who stepped on first before throwing late to the plate as Hobson tallied the tying run. After Carlton Fisk walked to reload the bases, Ken Brett relieved Tom Griffin and committed a balk, allowing Burleson to score the lead run.
