The Mariners tied the score with their lone tally in the fifth on a walk to Leroy Stanton and singles by Larry Milbourne and Bob Stinson.

The Yankees broke away in the seventh when Reggie Jackson singled, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Bucky Dent.
