A two-run homer by pinch-hitter Mike Ivie with two out in the ninth inning enabled the Giants to defeat the Phillies, 6-5. Mike Schmidt, batting in the leadoff spot for the first time in his career, homered with a man on base for the Phillies in the third inning. Willie McCovey hit one for the Giants in the sixth.

With the score tied, 4-4, Darrell Evans hit a double for the Giants with one out in the ninth but was trapped off second and retired on a grounder by Marc Hill. Ivie then batted for Roger Metzger and hit his ninth homer of the year and fourth as a pinch-hitter to put the Giants ahead, 6-4. In the Phillies' half, Garry Maddox knocked in a run with a double.
