Four unearned runs, resulting from two errors and a passed ball, enabled the Rangers to defeat the Royals, 4-3. In the first inning, Mike Hargrove and Jim Sundberg singled and both scored when Pete LaCock threw wildly to second after the first baseman had fielded a grounder by Al Oliver.

Bobby Bonds beat out an infield hit to Freddie Patek in the fourth and continued to second on a wild throw by the shortstop. Richie Zisk struck out, but when the third strike got past catcher Darrell Porter for a passed ball, Zisk reached first and Bonds took third. John Lowenstein singled, scoring Bonds.
