The A's ended a seven-game losing streak with an 8-4 victory over the Red Sox. Bill Lee, who was knocked out in the sixth inning after giving up nine hits and five of the A's runs (four earned), was tagged with his seventh straight defeat.

After Lee departed on the short end of a 5-2 score, the Red Sox counted twice on a triple by Jim Rice in the seventh, but the A's put the game away with three runs off Bill Campbell in the eighth, two unearned on a throwing error by Carlton Fisk.
