Helping himself to victory in relief, Tom Hume batted in the deciding two runs when the Reds scored three times in the 10th inning to defeat the Cubs, 9-7. George Foster hit a two-run homer for the Reds in the first. After getting a three-run drive by Bill Buckner in the third, the Cubs held a 6-3 lead going into the ninth when the Reds rallied to the tie score off Bruce Sutter.

Mike Lum doubled, Joe Morgan singled to make it 6-4 and Ken Griffey followed with a two-run homer to knot the count. In the 10th, Dan Driessen singled and was forced by Johnny Bench, who scored on singles by Dave Concepcion and Lum. Lynn McGlothen, replacing Sutter, then yielded Hume's two-run single and the reliever's hit proved decisive when the Cubs counted once in their half. [The Sporting News]
