Given a second chance after a controversial foul tip-third strike, Jerry Remy hit a three-run homer to provide the Red Sox with a 4-2 victory over the A's. In the fifth inning, after Butch Hobson and Rick Burleson drew walks, Remy apparently struck out, but plate umpire Durwood Merrill ruled a foul tip on strike three. The A's argued strenuously, but Merrill stuck with the call and moments later Remy smashed his round-tripper.
