Only one out away from a complete game, Paul Moskau lost control and needed help from Doug Bair to save the Reds' 5-2 victory over the Cardinals. After Ted Simmons homered to lead off the Cards' ninth, Moskau retired Keith Hernandez and Ken Reitz but then walked both Jerry Mumphrey and Mike Phillips before Bair came in to face pinch-hitter Wayne Garrett.
