. . . where the 1970s live forever!

Becoming the majors' first 20-game winner this season, Ron Guidry hurled the Yankees to a 9-1 victory over the Tigers in the first game of a doubleheader, but Detroit came back to win the second game, 5-4. The score was 1-1 going into the bottom of the seventh inning of the lidlifter when the Bronx Bombers exploded for eight runs. A triple by Graig Nettles started the uprising and Lou Piniella, Jim Spencer and Bucky Dent followed with singles. Sheldon Burnside relieved starter Milt Wilcox and got one out but then walked Willie Randolph and gave up a bases-loaded single to Thurman Munson. Chris Chambliss had a bases-loaded triple off Burnside and Nettles' second hit of the inning, a single, drove in the final tally.

The score was 4-4 going into the eighth inning of the second game when John Wockenfuss lashed a one-out double. One out later, Mark Wagner hit a fly ball to right field which Gary Thomasson dropped for an error, allowing Wockenfuss to score. [The Sporting News]
