Supporting Steve Carlton's seven-hit pitching with a 13-hit attack, the Phillies held on to first place in the N. L. East by downing the Cubs, 8-1. Mike Schmidt was the batting star, driving in four runs, one with a double and three with a homer. Schmidt's double scored Richie Hebner for the Phillies' first run in the second inning.
