Cracking defensively, the Red Sox committed seven errors and suffered a 13-2 defeat at the hands of the Yankees, who moved within two games of the first-place leaders in the East division. The victory was the Yankees' 19th in the last 24 games and their second straight shellacking of the Red Sox, who lost for the sixth time in the last eight games.

After counting twice with the aid of two errors in the first inning, the Yankees sent 11 men to the plate in the second and scored six runs, including a homer by Reggie Jackson with two men on base. Lou Piniella added a round-tripper in the fifth. Jim Beattie held the Red Sox scoreless until two out in the ninth when Mike Heath dropped a foul popup by Carlton Fisk, leading to two unearned runs.
