The Red Sox suffered their 11th defeat in the last 14 games and dropped out of first place in the East division after losing to the Indians, 2-1. David Clyde and Jim Kern combined on a seven-hitter. The score was 1-1 going into the last of the fifth inning when Dan Briggs smacked a leadoff triple. After Duane Kuiper grounded out, Tom Veryzer bunted down the first base line to score Briggs.
