. . . where the 1970s live forever!

The Yankees, who swept a three-game series in Fenway Park September 8-10, added a second straight victory over the collapsing Red Sox in Yankee Stadium, winning 3-2, and moved 3½ lengths ahead in the East division race. For the first time in the six meetings, the Red Sox took a lead when Jerry Remy singled and Jim Rice homered in the first inning. The Yankees came back with a run on singles by Willie Randolph, Thurman Munson and Reggie Jackson in their half of the first and tied the score when Jackson homered in the fifth.

Mickey Rivers tripled over the head of Carl Yastrzemski to open the Yankee ninth. Rivers was kept at third when Randolph grounded to Rick Burleson. Munson fouled an attempted squeeze bunt and then swung ahead, hitting a fly to right field. Rice fell down after making a running, off-balance catch and was unable to throw to the plate as Rivers scored to decide Catfish Hunter's duel with Mike Torrez. [The Sporting News]
