The Giants ended their seven game losing streak when Terry Whitfield singled with the bases loaded and two out in the ninth inning for his third hit of the game and drove in a run to beat the Reds, 3-2. George Foster hit his 33rd homer of the season for the Reds to tie the score at 2-2 in the eighth.

Art Gardner, coming in to run for Mike Ivie, took second on a sacrifice and reached third on an infield hit by Rob Andrews. After an intentional pass to John Tamargo loaded the bases, Skip James struck out before Whitfield delivered his single.
