Moving within 1½ games of the leading Yankees in the East division, the Red Sox outlasted the Tigers, 8-6, as Carl Yastrzemski drove home five runs. Yastrzemski had a three-run homer in the first inning after singles by Jerry Remy and Jim Rice and smacked a two-run double in the fourth when the Red Sox rallied for four runs to overcome a 6-4 deficit. Rice stroked a two-run single in the fourth for his 200th hit of the season, making him the first player in the majors to reach that plateau this year.

The Tigers threatened in the bottom of the ninth, putting two men on with none out, but Dick Drago relieved Bill Campbell and struck out Ron LeFlore. Andy Hassler then replaced Drago and, after walking Lou Whitaker to load the bases, induced Rusty Staub to bounce into a game-ending double play. [The Sporting News]
