After the Blue Jays won the opening game of the twin bill, 8-1, the Yankees came back to capture the nightcap, 3-2, and increase their lead in the East division to two full games over the Red Sox. In the lidlifter, Yankee ace Ron Guidry was shelled from the parapet, lasting only 1 2/3 innings, during which time he was thumped for five runs and six hits. The Jays' attack was climaxed by back-to-back triples by Rick Bosetti and Bob Bailor in the second inning.

The Yankees trailed in the second contest 2-0, going into the ninth inning, but scored three times to escape with a victory. A single by Willie Randolph began the rally and after Reggie Jackson drew walk, Blue Jay starter Tom Underwood was replaced by Victor Cruz.
