A five-hitter by Mike Krukow snapped the seven-game Pittsburgh winning streak as the Cubs prevailed, 5-1, dropping the Pirates two games behind the leading Phillies in the East division. The first Cub run came in the opening inning as Ivan DeJesus walked, advanced to third on a single by Manny Trillo and scored on a single by Bill Buckner. A single by Mick Kelleher, double by Krukow and single by DeJesus made it 2-0 in the second.

Pirate starter Jim Rooker was kayoed in the fourth. DeJesus drew a leadoff walk, moved to third on a single by Trillo and tallied on a sacrifice fly by Buckner. A double by Dave Kingman then plated Trillo. The final Cub run came in the eighth on a double by Mike Vail. [The Sporting News]
