Notching his ninth shutout of the season, Ron Guidry pitched a 4-0 victory over the Indians, enabling the Yankees to maintain their one-game lead over the Red Sox in the East division. The Yankees scored two runs in the fourth inning on singles by Thurman Munson, Reggie Jackson, Graig Nettles and Lou Piniella and added another pair in the seventh on hits by Bucky Dent, Willie Randolph, Munson and Jackson. Only one Tribe runner reached second base. The nine shutouts by Guidry tied the league record for southpaws set by Babe Ruth with the Red Sox in 1916. [The Sporting News] |
