Capping a brilliant regular season with his 24th victory, Ron Guidry tossed a four-hitter as the Yankees maintained their one-game lead in the East division by beating the Blue Jays, 3-1. Guidry raised his strikeout total to 243 for a new club record.

The Yankees took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Lou Piniella singled, went to second when Chris Chambliss was hit by a pitch and scored on a single by Roy White. The Blue Jays tied the game in the fifth on an error by Willie Randolph before a Toronto error gave the Yankees their victory in the sixth.

A single by Thurman Munson and a walk to Reggie Jackson sent Jay starter Balor Moore to the showers in favor of Tom Buskey. Piniella grounded out and Graig Nettles was walked intentionally to load the bases.
