Delighting an opening-game crowd of 37,748, Leon Roberts belted a two-run homer in the sixth inning to snap a 3-3 tie and lift the Mariners to a 5-4 triumph over the Angels. Larry Cox also had a two-run homer for the Mariners in the second and Willie Horton lashed a solo round-tripper in the fourth. All Mariner runs came off Angel ace Frank Tanana. John Montague hurled 6 2/3 innings of two-hit relief to gain credit for the victory. [The Sporting News]
