. . . where the 1970s live forever!

Marking Earl Weaver's 1,000th victory as manager, the Orioles opened their season by defeating the White Sox, 5-3, behind the three-hit pitching of Jim Palmer. The White Sox nicked Palmer for two runs in the second inning, but the Orioles came back to take command with three in their half.

Rich Dauer batted in the tying pair with a bases-loaded single and, after Rick Dempsey singled Dauer to third, Mark Belanger hit a sacrifice fly to put the Orioles ahead. Doug DeCinces, who batted in at least one run in each of the last 10 games of the 1978 season, made it 11 in a row with an infield out that produced what proved to be the Orioles' deciding tally in the fifth.
