Scoring an unearned run in the 10th inning without the benefit of a hit, the Expos defeated the Pirates, 3-2, in the season opener for both clubs. Gary Carter homered for the Expos and Ed Ott for the Pirates to help forge a 2-2 tie.

In the 10th, Kent Tekulve, working in relief for the Pirates, nicked Andre Dawson with a pitch. Willie Stargell failed to hold a pickoff throw, allowing Dawson to advance to second. Then, with two out, Dale Berra at third missed a grounder by Ellis Valentine as Dawson scored. [The Sporting News]
