John Denny pitched a five-hitter and Ken Reitz and Tony Scott each drove in three runs as the Cardinals opened their season by defeating the Phillies, 8-1. Garry Maddox homered for the Phils' lone tally. The game attracted a crowd of 40,526.

Cardinal ticket manager Mike Bertani said the sale of at least 10,000 tickets could be credited to Pete Rose, who made his debut in a Phillies' uniform and collected a single and also walked in four trips to the plate. [The Sporting News]
