Still dangerous at bat, Willie McCovey delivered a pinch-double in the eighth inning, setting up the tie-breaking run as the Giants defeated the Reds, 4-2. Mike Ivie, who has replaced McCovey at first base for the Giants, hit a two-run homer in the seventh.

After McCovey's two-bagger, Larry Herndon came in to run for the veteran and scored on an infield hit by Terry Whitfield to put the Giants ahead, 3-2. An insurance run followed in the ninth on a double by Jack Clark and single by Roger Metzger. [The Sporting News]
