An infield out by Jack Brohamer enabled Jim Rice to score the winning run as the Red Sox edged the Indians, 7-6, in 12 innings. With one out in the 12th, Rice beat out an infield hit and Carl Yastrzemski and George Scott walked to load the bases before Brohamer bounced a 3-and-2 pitch to second baseman Duane Kuiper as Rice scored.

The Indians had tied the game in the bottom of the ninth on a two-out RBI single by Toby Harrah off reliever Bill Campbell. Fred Lynn hit two homers for the Red Sox. [The Sporting News]
