Ed Ott smashed a homer and triple, driving in four runs, and John Milner, continuing his hot hitting as a sub for Willie Stargell, rapped two singles and a sacrifice fly, accounting for two RBIs, to lead the Pirates to a 7-4 victory over the Cardinals.

Ott's homer with a man on base in the sixth inning broke a 3-3 tie and his two-run triple in the eighth clinched the decision for Ed Whitson, normally a reliever. Whitson pitched eight innings before needing help from Grant Jackson in the ninth to quell a Cardinal threat. [The Sporting News]
