The Padres won the first game, 6-3, and the Reds copped the nightcap, 7-5, in a split of a doubleheader. The Padres capitalized on five errors in the opener. Misplays by third baseman Ray Knight and first baseman Dan Driessen allowed a pair of runs in the second inning and the third tally of the frame came across on a bases-loaded walk to Jerry Turner. An error by shortstop Dave Concepcion set up a two-run Padre sixth inning that was capped by a two-run double by John D'Acquisto.

In the second game, the Reds trailed, 5-3, entering the sixth stanza but rocked relievers Mark Lee and Rollie Fingers for six consecutive singles. The tie-breaking tally was produced on a single by Junior Kennedy. [The Sporting News]
