A seven-run explosion in the ninth inning propelled the Tigers to an 11-6 triumph over the Rangers, who suffered their first loss of the season after six straight victories. The Rangers led, 6-4, in the ninth with nobody on and two out when Lou Whitaker drew a bases on halls from Sparky Lyle. A single by Steve Kemp and walk to Jason Thompson loaded the bases and brought on Jim Kern to relieve Lyle.
