In a weird rally, three runs were forced across the plate on a hit batsman and two walks with the bases loaded to hand the Padres a 7-6 victory over the Giants. With two out in the ninth inning, Dan Briggs delivered a pinch-single and Gene Richards was safe on an error by shortstop Johnnie LeMaster. A walk to pinch-hitter Gene Tenace loaded the bases and brought Gary Lavelle to pitch in relief of Tom Griffin.

Jerry Turner was hit by a pitch to force in one run and the tying tally came 
home when Dave Winfield walked. With Mike Hargrove at the plate, the count reached 3-and-1 when Lavelle was ejected by plate umpire Dave Pallone for protesting the call. Joe Coleman entered the game and his first pitch to Hargrove was outside, forcing in Tenace with the winner. [The Sporting News]
