The White Sox spoiled the return of Wayne Garland by defeating the Indians, 6-5. Garland, who underwent a shoulder operation last May, gave up seven hits and three runs, two earned, before leaving the game on the short end of a 3-1 score after six innings.

The White Sox padded their lead to 6-1 against Len Barker before relief wildness almost cost them their victory. Lerrin LaGrow issued two passes with the bases loaded in the eighth and Mike Proly allowed two more runs on a walk and a sacrifice fly. However, Proly then got the last two outs in the eighth and retired the side in the ninth to save the victory for starter Ross Baumgarten. [The Sporting News]
