The Cardinals came up with two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to edge the Reds, 4-3, ending Cincinnati's five-game winning skein. The Cards trailed, 3-2, when Keith Hernandez began the winning rally with a one-out double. A single by Ted Simmons scored Hernandez with Simmons going to second on the throw to the plate.
