Joel Youngblood knocked in three runs with a homer to spark the Mets to a 10-3 triumph over the Giants in a game protested by both teams after a delay of 28 minutes in arguments over a controversial call. With Met runners on first and third and none out in the first inning, Lee Mazzilli lined a shot to deep right-center that Jack Clark caught as Frank Taveras tagged and scored from third.

Clark, however, then dropped the ball and his throw to second caught Richie Hebner, who had not tagged up from first, thinking the ball had been dropped. The umpires ruled Clark had caught the ball but returned Hebner to first in a compromise situation since Hebner saw one umpire signal that the ball had been dropped. Willie Montanez walked when play resumed and Youngblood hit his three-run homer. [The Sporting News]
