Inserted into the lineup because of a three-game suspension to Ellis Valentine, Jerry White slugged a three-run homer to climax a five-run first inning that propelled the Expos to a 9-6 decision over the Padres.

The Expos' first run came on a double by Rodney Scott and triple by Warren Cromartie. A single by Tony Perez plated Cromartie and, after a single by Gary Carter, White socked the ball over the left field fence.
