Jeff Newman belted a three-run homer and Wayne Gross and Mario Guerrero drove in two runs apiece to carry the A's to an 8-5 victory over the Orioles, who were stopped on their nine-game winning streak. Newman whacked his homer in the second inning.

After the Orioles took a 4-3 lead, the A's erupted for five runs in the sixth. Gross tripled in two runs and three more followed on a bases-loaded walk to Joe Wallis and a single by Guerrero. The victory was the A's first over the Orioles since August, 1977, spanning 13 games. [The Sporting News]
