Jeff Newman played the hero's role as the A's gained a 5-4, 11-inning triumph over the Red Sox. With two out in the ninth inning and the A's trailing, 4-3, Newman cracked a home run off Bill Campbell to tie the score.

Then, in the 11th inning, Newman stroked a single off Dick Drago to send Mitchell Page home with the winning run. Page had singled and stolen second. An intentional walk to Wayne Gross preceded Newman's decisive single. [The Sporting News]
