A seventh-inning single by Doug Flynn snapped a 3-3 tie and lifted the Mets to a 4-3 triumph over the Padres. Joel Youngblood stroked a one-out single off reliever Bob Shirley, now 0-4. Following an intentional walk to Steve Henderson, Flynn bounced a single up the middle.

The Padres finished the game under protest, claiming that Met manager Joe Torre, who had been ejected in the third inning over a balk dispute, was illegally in the bullpen instead of the clubhouse after being heaved. [The Sporting News]
