After blowing a 5-1 lead, the Cardinals rallied for two runs in the ninth inning and defeated the Braves, 7-6. The Braves tied the score with a four-run outburst in the eighth and went ahead in the ninth when Jerry Royster singled and Gary Matthews doubled.

In the Cards' half, Jerry Mumphrey walked and Keith Hernandez knotted the count with a triple. After two intentional passes loaded the bases, Braves' outfielders played in close for a possible play at the plate and Ken Reitz lashed a drive over the head of right fielder Matthews for the winning single.
