With Chuck Rainey pitching a three-hitter, the Red Sox breezed to an 8-2 decision over the A's. In the second inning, the Red Sox loaded the bases on a single by Butch Hobson, double by Dwight Evans and walk to Gary Allenson. A sacrifice fly by Jerry Remy produced one run and a single by Rick Burleson added another. Two more tallies then crossed the plate on a wild pitch and a pair of errors by catcher Jeff Newman.

The Red Sox picked up three more runs in the third when Jim Rice doubled, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a throwing error by Newman. After a walk to Hobson, George Scott belted a homer to give the Sox a 7-0 lead. Hobson accounted for the last Red Sox run with a round-tripper in the seventh.
