Dividing a twin bill, the Royals won the opener, 7-4, and the Mariners captured the nightcap, 6-2. In the first game, after a homer by Clint Hurdle in the fifth inning put the Royals ahead to stay at 2-1, Darrell Porter decided the outcome with a three-run smash in the sixth.

The Mariners erupted for four runs in the eighth inning of the second game to break a 2-2 tie. Larry Cox began the winning rally with a single and scored on singles by Julio Cruz and Ruppert Jones. Another Mariner run crossed the plate on a throwing error by catcher John Wathan before Willie Horton capped the frame with a two-run homer. [The Sporting News]
