A two-out single in the ninth inning by Mike Phillips broke up a pitching duel between John Denny and Steve Rogers and gave the Cardinals a 1-0 triumph over the Expos. The Redbirds began the ninth with a leadoff single by Ted Simmons. Garry Templeton, running for Simmons, stole second and stopped at third on a single by George Hendrick.

After Tony Scott was intentionally passed to load the bases, Ken Reitz bounced into a first-to-home-to-first double play, leaving runners on second and third with two out. The Expos elected to pitch to Phillips, who spoiled the strategy by lining the game-winning single to right. Denny allowed only two hits, none after the second inning. [The Sporting News]
