Climaxing a scoring marathon, a homer by Mike Schmidt -- his second round-tripper of the game -- with two out in the 10th inning lifted the Phillies to a 23-22 victory in a slugfest with the Cubs. Aided by an 18-mile-per-hour wind, the teams combined for 11 home runs. tying the major league record. Dave Kingman belted three circuit clouts for the Cubs, knocking in six runs, but teammate Bill Buckner took the RBI honors, driving in seven runs with a grand slam and three singles. Steve Ontiveros and Jerry Martin also homered for the Cubs.

In addition to Schmidt's pair, the Phillies had round-trippers by Bob Boone, Randy Lerch and Garry Maddox. Boone had three hits and drove in five runs. The game produced a total of 50 hits, two shy of the N. L. record for an extra-inning game. The Phillies collected 24 hits, including five by Larry Bowa and four by Maddox. Buckner's four hits topped the Cubs. The Phillies led, 17-6, after 3½ innings, but the Cubs kept battling back and finally tied the score at 22-22 with three runs in the eighth on RBI singles by Buckner, Martin and Barry Foote.
