Three and two-thirds innings of one-hit relief pitching by Mark Clear, after replacing Frank Tanana, helped the Angels defeat the White Sox, 7-3. The Angels broke a 3-3 tie with two runs in the fourth when the White Sox missed pulling off an ordinary double play and wound up with an unusual one. Carney Lansford singled to open the stanza and, after Brian Downing grounded out, Bobby Grich and Bert Campaneris walked to load the bases, bringing Rich Hinton to the mound for the White Sox in relief of Ron Schueler.

Rick Miller grounded to second baseman Alan Bannister, who tried to start a double play by tagging Campaneris, but the runner backed off. Bannister then threw out Miller at first as Lansford scored. On the return throw from first baseman Lamar Johnson to shortstop Greg Pryor, Campaneris was caught in a rundown, but before he could be retired to complete the double play, Grich also scored.
