An argument with an umpire that resulted in the banishment of Lou Whitaker worked out to the advantage of the Tigers when Mark Wagner, who took Whitaker's place at second base, hit a two-run double in the ninth inning to beat the Indians. 5-3. Singles by Aurelio Rodriguez and Ron LeFlore preceded Wagner's two-bagger. Whitaker had three hits in three trips and also drove in two runs before drawing his walking papers in the fifth inning.
