In their first meeting this season, the Yankees thrashed the Red Sox, 10-0, behind the four-hit pitching of Jim Beattie, who posted his first major league shutout. The Yankees loaded the bases against Mike Torrez in the fifth inning and scored their first run on a sacrifice fly by Thurman Munson.

After a walk reloaded the bases, Reggie Jackson, who was observing his 33rd birthday, lashed a two-run double. Munson picked up his second RBI of the game with a single in the eighth when the Yankees added four runs. [The Sporting News]
