After the Phillies and Cubs hit a record-tying 11 homers in the previous day's game, there was another bombardment in Wrigley Field with six circuit clouts as the Pirates defeated the Cubs, 9-5. Wind again was a factor, blowing out at 16 miles per hour. Dave Kingman, who hit three homers against the Phillies, whacked another against the Pirates.

The Cubs also had round-trippers by Ted Sizemore and Bill Buckner, while Dave Parker, Willie Stargell and Steve Nicosia connected for the Pirates. However, homers didn't figure when Pirates broke the tie with two runs in the fifth. Markers scored on a single by Parker, double by Bill Robinson and single by Nicosia. [The Sporting News]
