Led by Fred Lynn, who batted in two runs and scored one, the Red Sox edged the Yankees, 4-3. In the first inning, Rick Burleson singled and scored on a double by Lynn, who also crossed the plate on a single by Jim Rice. The Yankees picked up a run on singles by Mickey Rivers, Roy White and Thurman Munson in the fifth and went ahead with two in the seventh on a bases-loaded single by Graig Nettles.

The Red Sox came back to win in their half. Dwight Evans led off with an infield hit, took second on a sacrifice by Gary Allenson and scored on a single by Jerry Remy, who took second on the throw.
