Making his first start of the season, Jim Rooker scattered three hits over 8 1/3 innings as the Pirates defeated the Cubs, 3-0. After Dave Parker homered in the first inning, the game was a tight duel until the Pirates added an insurance pair in the eighth with walks to Dale Berra and Omar Moreno, a single by John Milner and a wild pitch. Rooker was removed with one away in the ninth after Ted Sizemore bunted safely and Sam Mejias walked. Enrique Romo, in relief, passed Bobby Murcer to load the bases but then retired Mike Vail before Grant Jackson came in to get Bill Buckner for the final out. [The Sporting News] |
