With Willie McCovey as the batting star, the Giants swept a doubleheader with the Braves, winning the first game, 4-2, and going 11 innings to take the second game, 7-6. In the opener, McCovey batted in the Giants' first run with an infield out in the first inning and added another with a single in the fifth to tie the score at 2-2. Bill North doubled in the seventh, continued to third on a throwing error by right fielder Gary Matthews and scored on a sacrifice fly by Terry Whitfield to put the Giants ahead before Bill Madlock clinched the decision with a homer in the eighth.

In the nightcap, McCovey was out of the lineup while Mike Ivie played first base for the Giants, but the veteran slugger came off the bench in the 11th and delivered a two-run pinch-homer to win the game. Ivie and Larry Herndon both homered for the Giants in the second inning. Bob Horner drove in the Braves' first three runs with a sacrifice fly and a homer. The Giants, who scored two unearned runs on a throwing error by catcher Bruce Benedict in the seventh, held a 5-3 lead until the Braves tied the score in ninth with a homer by Charlie Spikes and doubles by Matthews and Jeff Burroughs.
