Capitalizing on a two-out error by Richie Hebner in the 12th inning, the Cardinals scored six unearned runs to defeat the Mets, 9-4. The Cards picked up their first three runs in the first inning, two scoring on a homer by Keith Hernandez, but the Mets came back with a pair in their half on four singles and tied the score in fifth with two walks and a single by Hebner for his second RBI of the game.

However, in the 12th, after a single by Ted Simmons and two passes loaded the bases with two away, Hebner became the goat when the third baseman booted a grounder by George Hendrick as Simmons scored. Lou Brock, Ken Oberkfell, Hernandez and Simmons, who batted for the second time in the inning, followed with singles for five more runs.
