The Astros swept a doubleheader from the Padres, winning the opener, 1-0, and capturing the nightcap, 6-3. In the lidlifter, Terry Puhl smacked Gaylord Perry's second pitch of the game over the left field wall for the contest's only run. Rick Williams, the winner of the duel, walked one and struck out two in going the distance for the first time in his major league career.

In the second game, the Astros took advantage of the Padres' loose play to score five runs in the eighth inning. In that frame, after Denny Walling walked and took third on a single by Craig Reynolds, Padre center fielder Gene Richards dropped a sacrifice fly by Cesar Cedeno as both runners scored.
